Acute kidney injury develops commonly in critically ill patients, and no intervention has ever been shown to prevent it.

(Isotonic crystalloid given intravenously to high-risk patients before and during cardiac catheterization probably prevents some contrast nephropathy, although the evidence is less than certain.)
