Applied Respiratory Physiology for the Ventilator: A Workshop from the Hospitalist & Resuscitationist Conference

Considering the independent and dependent variables of ventilation marked my final contribution to the “Hospitalist and the Resuscitationist” conference in Montreal, Canada; I gave a workshop on graphical analyses of ventilation. This began with the basics of spontaneous breathing and advanced to machine assistance – both discussed under the banner of the respiratory equation of motion. The theory was then used to illustrate the basic meaning of the flow and pressure graphics displayed on nearly all ventilators and provide the essentials for waveform analysis with special attention paid to synchrony.
